Looking to the Future
Honoring the Past
Fletcher and Henderson County are working hard to attract businesses and jobs in the manufacturing sector, which is a good thing. To balance and complement that effort, our project hopes to attract smaller startup and technology companies, particularly those related to Agriculture Technology (AgTech) that will support farmers and our farming tradition in the region.
AgTech is any technology that improves efficiency on the farm or in the food value chain. Using technology to help farmers reduce labor and input costs and improve profitability helps keep farmers on the land and our farming heritage alive in WNC.

Why Focus on AgTech?
Introducing Western North Carolina's Applied AgTech Innovation District
Agriculture is the #1 industry in North Carolina.
Western North Carolina is ready to take the lead in AgTech.
The concept of creating a new tech corridor to attract Agri-food and AgTech companies is supported by two recent reports prepared by the research firm RTI Innovation Advisors, including one for Dogwood Health Trust, "Opportunities for AgriFood Tech in Western North Carolina". WNC is uniquely positioned to take the lead in food and agricultural technology, and this project is just the beginning.
Investments in new technologies for food production have the potential to address the three most critical and interconnected challenges of our time: deteriorating public health from poor diets of processed foods, rapidly rising healthcare costs, and mounting environmental pressure.

Join a community of small companies looking to change the world.

Our newest project now under development is focused on attracting technology startups with smaller incubator spaces for office, labs, research and prototype design. We are targeting companies that are focused on innovation and emerging technologies to include:
-
AgTech including drones, field sensors, satellite imaging
-
Food waste reduction and distribution systems
-
Food and beverage processing
-
Energy including solar, wind and battery tech
-
Climate science
-
Sustainable building materials
The new development includes over 20,000 square feet of business incubator space reserved for small companies and tech startups with low rental cost and easy lease terms in a collaborative environment with other like-minded companies.
Smaller rental units range in size from 1200 to 4,000 sf. Many units include a mezzanine loft area.

A Home for Ag Science
The key to the future of farming is farm efficiency--
to “grow more with less”; less labor, less inputs, less disruption to the natural environment and ecosystems. New technologies that help fight weeds and pests, reduce the need for expensive chemicals and fertilizers, Improve yields, reduce waste, and make crops more drought resistant, are needed now more than ever as farmers struggle with rising costs.
We build with the hope that our new development will become a hub for climate smart farming research and a shared learning space that will create connections between AgTech research and our regional farmers.
A new technology corridor may also encourage young students to focus on STEM education (science, technology, engineering and math), because there is opportunity here... right here in WNC.
